What is MSME?

MSME stands for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. MSME is classified under different categories based on the investment cap and machinery or equipment made in use. These enterprises are segregated based on the investment cap, and it follows:

  • Microenterprise – Rs. 25 lakh;
  • Small enterprise – Rs. 25 lakh, which does not exceed Rs. 5 crores;
  • Medium enterprise – More than Rs.5 crore, which does not exceed Rs.10 crore.

Looking at the current scenario, the government has two classifications of MSME, and they are:

  • Manufacturing enterprises
  • Enterprises Rendering Services

What is an MSME Certificate?

In the scenario, if one applicant wants to register for multiple MSMEs, you must go through separate registration for each enterprise. And for each of your MSME registrations, a certificate is issued.

What businesses are categorized under the MSME scheme?

Based on different industries, the government of India has classified businesses as micro, small or medium. But in the current case, the classification looks like this:

  • Manufacturing Enterprises
  • Enterprises Rendering Services

The updated notification as published in the Gazette of India, June 1, 2020 (with effect from July 1, 2020) omits the existing definition as published in the same on the 29th September 2006 and follows:

Micro- Enterprise:

Industry: Plant & Machinery or Equipment

Any businesses under the category mentioned above will be considered micro-enterprises. It should not exceed the limit of 1 crore rupees in investment, and the annual turnover shouldn’t be beyond 5 crores.

Small Enterprise:

Industry: Plant & Machinery or Equipment

In this category, businesses under the category mentioned will be classified as small enterprises provided the businesses should not be beyond 10 crore rupees in investment, and the annual turnover should be within 50 crore rupees.

Medium Enterprise:

Industry: Plant & Machinery or Equipment

A business under this specified category is a medium enterprise if the investment amount is not 50 crore rupees and annual turnover remains below 250 crores. 

To make it even more, simpler, under the plant & machinery or equipment category: 

  • Micro: Investment<Rs. 1 lakh & Annual Turnover<Rs.5 Cr
  • Small: Investment<Rs. 10 Crore & Annual Turnover<Rs. 50 Cr
  • Medium: Investment<Rs. 50 Cr & Annual Turnover<Rs. 250 Cr

What are the benefits of MSME registration? 

Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises looks at this as a good contribution, supporting rural upliftment. And for these reasons, MSMEs are essential. To keep up the spirit of entrepreneurs, the ministry of MSME has various stable benefits and schemes, and they go like:

  • MSME can avail lower bank interest with as low as 1% with EMI options.
  • Registered MSME’s enjoys the tax exemption.
  • The minimum alternate tax or MAT for registered MSME can be taken forward to 15 days; typically, it is for 10 years.
  •  All the MSME’s registered under the ministry of MSME gets priority over other applications, licenses or certificates which the government of India issues.
  • A registered MSME avails different concessions on setting up the industry and other patents.
  • Entrepreneurs can easily access the credit required for business.
  • MSME gets the preferences for the government tenders on the Udyam Registration Portal as it is integrated with the eMarketplace by the government and allows access to e-tenders.
  • MSME gets the benefit to avail one-time settlement fee for any delayed or unpaid amounts of MSME.

MSME Registration Process:

The registration process for MSME is relatively easy. An entrepreneur needs to follow the 9 simple steps, and they are:

  • You can do your registration through an online government portal or offline financial institutions.
  • Registration for an Aadhar card is a must before registering for MSME.
  • MSME applications can be filed using the Udyam Registration.
  • Registered enterprise is granted registration for 5 years or 60 months.
  • e-Aadhaar OTP verification is also an option to consider.
  • NOCs and loans can be easily obtained through provisional registration.
  • Once the business is commenced, entrepreneurs can apply for a permanent MSME license.
  • A permanent license with a lifetime validity can be availed. But the cancellation of it is subjective.
